Maurane may call her new album Différente, but it is definitely in keeping with her previous releases. The 13 tracks vary from folk to jazz to neo-gospel and to a style I think of as show tunes without the show.

Ever since her debut as Marie-Jeanne in Starmania, Maurane has made a career belting out powerful ballads. Her full voice and impressive range make her a natural for fully orchestrated numbers. And on her most recent release there are many to choose from.

The title track features the African Gospel Choir. While the song certainly sounds like a gospel tune, the message being celebrated here deals with art of singing: "Si différente / quand je chante / mon âme explose / me métamorphose(91k)."

With each new release, Maurane becomes more and more involved with its creation. She wrote the lyrics to five songs and composed the music to three. Even in the songs written for her, notably by Jean-Claude Vannier and Philippe Lafontaine, her sensibilities are in full evidence. The songs deal with love and the fear of losing love. And of course with motherhood and children.

While other performers are known for their extravagant lifestyles, Maurane is most often portrayed as the adoring mother. She plays this role on her album with songs like «Juste une petite fille», «Molly 'O» and «Lou dans l'aquarium»(187k). This last one is a silly romp done with just vocals and percussion in a jazzy Caribbean style.

My favorite track in «Il y a mille ans…» It's a beautiful love song completely written by Maurane, where she sings to the father of her child: "Tu m'as laissé maudire / Les fantômes, et les vielles rancoeurs, redonné le désir / Empêché d'avoir peur / A dormir contre toi, / Je ne serai plus jamais la même / Aussi doux qu'autrefois…/ Y a mille ans que je t'aime(181k)."

Maurane's voice is among the loveliest to heard in the French speaking world. Her music is modern but easy on the ears. Différente is an album to be savored!
