Ophélie

| It would be easy to dismiss Ophélie Winter former video jockey on M6 (the French equivalent to MTV), TV actress, star of teen films like "Bouge", and dance music diva as just another pretty face. Yet look a little closer and youll discover more: a job singing with Prince (as he was then called); a role in a Claude Lelouch film (Hommes, Femmes: Mode dEmploi, 1996), and, these days, a more mature Winter with a formidable sophomore release, Privacy. "Dans Mon Intimité", the bouncy first song, mixes a crisp hip-hop beat and turntable scratches with acoustic guitar a very nice touch. The song is Winters response to life in the public eye and being a target for the media. «Je sens tes yeux de lâche épier ma vie/ Tu guettes chacun de mes pas pour savoir avec qui / Je rentre chez moi et dans lobscurité/ Tu mettras le chaos dans mon intimité.» The next song, "This Is How Im Gonna Make You Mine", is a sweet R&B song in English. Again youll hear the warm guitar against a hip-hob beat. Much of the production owes to American R&B and hip-hop music no surprise, since Ophélie is half-French and half-American. The addition of guitar, live drums, and other elements give certain songs an extra vibrancy. Winter has grown as a writer and a vocalist and there are some really nice moments on this CD especially the thoughtfully orchestrated ballad "Elle Pleure" and the Motown funk of "Tout lMonde", complete with horn section and soulful backing vocals. The track "Ce Que Je Suis" incorporates the breakbeat/hip-hop sound that has become all the rage in America. In fact, this song was remade by US teen pop star Christina Aguilera under the title "What a Girl Wants". |
