Véronique Sanson has been in the music business for more than thirty years. She is a singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist who took France by storm with her 1974 debut album, Amoureuse (covered by Hart Rouge in 1994). Ever since then she has remained one of the number one artists in the business, a no-nonsense woman capable of creating art on her own terms. In fact, one of her hits was a song called "Besoin de personne"! In my search for CDs to review in this site, I have been frustrated at the imbalance of male and female solo artists. Véronique Sanson is the remedy for that.

Indestructible finds the diva in top form. The material on this release, written mostly by Sanson (with additional material by Bernard Swell), is a collection of strong songs that are opinionated and bold without sacrificing any sentimentality. Sanson's throaty alto sounds refreshing and nicely aged with time.

The album opens with the bouncy title song, "Indestructible". Here Sanson sings of the balancing act that life can be: "On continue notre errance entre le bien et le mal/ Entre l'eau pure et l'eau sale, mais toujours avec élégance/ Indestructible".

Item#04734   $21.95
Lyrics included.

On the second track, "Les tyrans", she writes about living in a male-dominated society: "J'ai toujours vécu dans un monde d'hommes/ En plein sourire dans un non-dit/ Celui qui a mangé la pomme/ C'est pas une femme/ Dieu me l'a dit". The production is influenced by American R&B of today: smooth beats glide along in the background while layers of keyboards carry the melody.

"Hotêl Biron - Chambre 22" is a funky techno-pop song, followed by the mid-tempo "Les Fiancés". On the track "Un Être Idéal", Sanson exhibits her incisive wit: "Faut-il pour être sûr d'avoir son nom sur la liste/ Être divinement égoïste/ Comme un Bouddha jamais triste/ Un être idéal". The strongest song on the album is by far "Dans la Même Ville", a song about two lovers who have been separated: "On dort dans la même ville/ Pas dans la même vie/ Mais sous la même étoile/ Qui nous a réunis".

Indestructible is an impressive album by an artist of force, a woman who has been making powerful and important music for three decades. For fans this is a must-have; for those unfamiliar with Sanson's music this is the perfect introduction.
