#04881 $20.95 CD LyricsIf you've heard her earlier work, you already know that Axelle Red is a big fan of 1960s soul music. Her first two records were infused with that old-fashioned sound, which complements so well her intimate singing style. Toujours Moi finds Red expanding in a new direction - the future. Don't worry, you'll still find all the elements that made the 1996 smash A Tatons such a great listen : the songs are solid, the arrangements are imaginative and the musicianship is top-notch. The slinky "Faire des Mamours" opens the album, and Red delivers a seductive vocal over the low-key trip-hop beat in the background. "Dis réveille-toi / Car moi je dors pas / Toute la soirée tu papottes / Maintenant tu dors comme une marmotte," whispers Red to her sleeping lover. The following song, "Mon Futur Proche", avoids a standard pop production in favor of a lively arrangement built on kinetic percussion, piano and organ. Over this strange yet effective brew she muses: "Balader en string en hiver / Prendre des calmants pour me taire / Sauter d'Notre Dame en benji / Tout pour t'avoir". Around the middle of the disc the songs become more experimental. The gentle ballad "Parce Que C'est Toi" leads into "A 82 Ans", which beautifully treads the line between pop and techno while remaining a delicate rumination on the future: "Peux-tu nous imaginer / A 82 ans / On passera nos journées / A remuer le temps". There are some pop gems on this CD, most notably "Ce Matin" and the delicious retro groove of "Bimbo à Moi", but the real standout is a lushly orchestrated, 8-minute intstrumental track ("Stay or Not") that rivals Isaac Hayes' best work. Toujours Moi is the first album that Red produced on her own. Ambitious, stylish and complex, this record is a modern classic. |
