Québéc native Bruno Pelletier has been winning rave reviews recently in Paris for his performance in the play "Notre Dame de Paris", so it seems to be a perfect time to talk about his latest album, "Miserere". This release is mainly comprised of folk-rock songs, produced by Bruno himself. His material would fit in nicely with much of what is on the American rock stations right now. The title track is a grand, operatic song Pelletiers resilient voice soars over the music, confident and powerful. "Aime" is a sensitive, melodic love song with an irresistible hook: "Aime/ cest la seule vrai raison de vivre/ Le plus dur des chemins à suivre/ Ça ne sapprend pas dans les livres.". At turns velvety smooth and intimate (as on "Aime" and "Coriace"), he is also capable of belting out a rocker like "Change" without missing a step. "Où Que Tu Sois" begins as a simple pop song but shows some nice melodic inventiveness, as does the mid-tempo groove of "Pardonne". "Ma Vie" is a moving, dramatic ballad where Pelletier takes advantage of his expansive vocal range. That is followed by a cover of the Ginette Reno classic "Je Ne Suis Quune Chanson". For a finale, "Miserere" is reprised en version classique, minus the rock band and with horns replacing the electric guitars. Pelletier is a passionate performer gifted with an impressive voice. The contrast of opera and rock works very well at revealing the full range of his talents. This is a very enjoyable album! |
