I was lucky enough to get a copy of this album before it came out in America, and I have been eager to write about it since the first time I heard it. This is the second album from sisters Christine and Laura Mayne. Unlike their first album, which was more about Euro-dance and jazz, this one is pure soul and R&B, American style.

Laura Mayne handled a lot of the album's production herself, as well as playing several instruments. The bass is thick, and the vocal production is superior to any album I've heard in years. The songs are superb, each one better than the one before. In addition to writing many of the songs themselves, Chris and Laura got help from some great writers, including Dianne Warren (who has written for Céline Dion, Patricia Kaas, and Toni Braxton) and Pascale Hospital (half of the French duo A.M.E. Strong).

The album begins with "Le saut", an inspirational song about realizing potential: "Tu feras un jour le saut/ De ceux qui vont plus haut/ Tu fais ta place/ Un homme dans l'univers." Next is the jazzy "Assez c'est assez", and the ballad "Je me jette à l'amour".

Les couleurs de l'amour
Item 04655, CD $24.95
Songs: Native theme, Le saut, Assez c'est assez, Je me jète à l'amour, Décide l'heure, Brotherlude, Les couleurs de l'amour, L'éclat de nos cœurs, Sisterlude, Saurais-tu le faire, Dans ce monde à part, Comme si, Motherlude, L'Eden ici, A place on Earth. Lyrics included.

The track "Décide l'heure" is a mid-tempo power ballad that gives the sisters a chance to belt, and they do! They create a gorgeous wall of harmony, against which they sing melodies to make any diva envious.     Song after song, Native sing their hearts out, whether about racism ("Les couleurs de l'amour"), love (the gentle "L'éclat de nos cœurs"), or the fate of humankind (the lush "L'Eden ici"). They sing in English as well, and there are some American groups that might want to run for cover if these two decide to take on the US!

These ladies are not only talented, they have a message, which they share on the final track, "A place on Earth": "Whoever you are/ Wherever you come from/ You deserve your place on Earth…" If you appreciate soulful singing and beautiful songs, you absolutely must buy this CD!
