California native Teri Moise delivers an
impressive sophomore album with her self-titled 1999 release. Intimate and stripped-down,
Teri Moïse is a collection of songs about relationships and life, especially life in the
public eye. "Encore Fou" addresses the latter with candor. It is a soulful song
where she ponders : " Si on pouvait séchanger de place / Quel commentaire à
faire devant la glace ? Sauvage ? Lâme en cage ? "
The gentle sway of "CEst Ainsi"
leaves room for Moïses striking harmony to fill the landscape. Her voice has grown
richer since her first release in 1996 and the
honest poetry of her lyrics are always a pleasure to hear. Again Teri Teri includes a
large array of musical styles that is eclectic yet fits together nicely.
The hard-edged funk from before has given way to the
elastic groove of "Maudit Soit Cet Amour", with its slithering bass line and
Latin percussion. The last song, "Fais Semblant", is a mellow jazz tune, and
"Star" is a sweet pop song backed by strings.
In the end, though, the songs are the
centerpiece of this very personal album. The arrangements are beautiful yet unadorned, and
Moïse sings over them in her soaring alto. Her unique perspective makes listening to her
thoughts on life and love a wonderful experience. Teri Moise is an excellent album!
