Hart Rouge, a quartet from Saskatchewan, have been making music together for many, many years. The group is made up of four siblings: Annette, Suzanne, Michelle and Paul Campagne. Therefore it makes sense that their voices should blend together so seamlessly. In addition, they wrote and played the instruments for most of the eleven songs on this, their fourth CD. From the very first song, "Savourer l'instant", their organic, folk-pop-rock sound is in full strength. The arrangements and vocals are superb, as in the the easy-going, country-tinged "Rien N'est Si Doux". Michelle sings the lead while her brother and sisters build a gentle wall of harmony behind her, creating a magical effect. The complex "Belle Hirondelle" illustrates Hart Rouge's songwriting skills: "Elle m'appelle me belle hirondelle/ Et moi je lui cache mon horreur des oiseaux". |

La Fabrique is a by far the best album Hart Rouge has produced to date. The arrangements are simple and uncluttered yet far from pedestrian. Also, each member of the group is talented as a lead singer, and they courageously place the vocals center stage with a minimum of studio effects. The songs "Mon Envie Douce", "Amoureuse", and "Soulève-moi" feature harmonies sure to give the listener chills. I have heard Hart Rouge compared to October Project and Alison Krauss, among others. Comparisons aside, this is music the way it should be: Well-written songs, wonderful musicianship, and excellent production. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys folk music, but I think that this disc will also appeal to anyone who enjoys music that is carefully crafted. |
