The complex instrumentation perfectly supports Fersen's voice, best described as a raspy tenor. Fersen's lyrics are wry and clever, as in the opening song; "Bucéphale": "Si ce vieux Bucéphale/ N'est pas le bon cheval/Je mange mon chapeau." "Les papillons", the third song, is a fun exploration of latin rhythms, while "Que l'on est bête" ("Que l'on est bête/ Quand on est amoureux") is set to a tango beat. However, the best song is saved for last. The waltz "Je suis de'vnue la Bonne" is the most melodically interesting song on the album, and it ends in a breathtaking wash of strings and accordeon. Fersen is doing wonders for French music, writing the kinds of songs previously forsaken by radio and major labels in France. For those of us who cherish that old-fashioned sound, this album is a rare gem. |
