DePalmas |
Les Lois de la Nature begins much like the first album did - with a good old-fashioned folk-rock song, "Comme ça". The song is a humorous look at a man trying to win back his lover: "Je mens comme je respire", he confesses. But that first track is where the similarity ends. Gérald takes a step in a different direction this time, mixing his folk guitar style and catchy pop songs with funky beats, groovy bass lines, and soulful vocals. The result is a genuinely unique sound. De Palmas offers three great rock songs in a row - "Les lois de la nature", "La seule qui sait", and "Mary Jane" - before getting more experimental. On the moody, mid-tempo "Ma sirène", he ponders: "Si jamais je me noie/ Si par hasard je prends goût à ça/ Ma sirène sait prendre soin de moi". The song "Johnny & Joe" is about the exploits of a Casanova: "Pour séduire leurs femmes je suis un expert/ Affûté comme un couteau/ Mon ego et moi, nous sommes très fiers/ De ne jamais dormir seuls". "Laisse-moi te dire" mixes drum loops, Indian sitars, and gospel vocals. Not only is DePalmas a very talented singer and guitarist, but the production on this album is quite innovative, mixing old and new, live and pre-recorded, in an incredible sonic patchwork.
