Sisters
Flora and Léa Mahjun are Célène, writing and singing together on this debut album. It
was produced by Fred Versailles, best known for his work on breakthrough first albums for
rap group IAM and soul duo Native
(also sisters).
Célène are of a
different musical variety than those other artists, with more folk, country and pop
influences. Nonetheless I can easily see them becoming very successful in their own right.
Flora and Léa compose eloquent, lovely songs where they share the lead vocals, with one
singing melody as the other covers the harmony.
For example, the bluesy guitar work on "Sous Ma Peau"
contrasts beautifully with the sisters' vocals as they sing : "Je te sens battre sous
ma peau / Du bas jusqu'en haut / Je me sens des ailes / Tu m'ensorcelles."
The delicate ballad
"Quand On N'Aime Pas" consists solely of voice, guitars and lush strings. There
are also two piano ballads - "Juste un Signe" and "Roméo". This is a
strong, distinct debut from two very talented women.
If you enjoy the music of
Hart Rouge, Zachary Richard
or Michel Rivard, then this CD is for you.
